Fight Deck: Bringing Arcade Fighting to the Tabletop

Fight Deck: Bringing Arcade Fighting to the Tabletop

Classic 2D fighting games like Street Fighter and Tekken have dominated arcades and consoles for decades. They thrilled players with fast-paced action, deep strategy, and competitive gameplay. Now, Fight Deck is bringing that same level of excitement to the tabletop. It offers a card-based combat system that captures the mind games, combos, and dynamic flow of arcade fighters.

In this interview, we talk with the Fight Deck team about how they translated fighting game mechanics into a fast-paced, strategic card game, the artistic inspiration behind its pixel-art visuals, and what’s next for this expanding universe.

The Inspiration Behind Fight Deck

Michael (GizmoCrowd): Classic 2D fighting games like Street Fighter and Tekken have a huge fan base. What inspired you to bring the fast-paced mechanics of arcade fighters to a tabletop card game, and how does Fight Deck capture that experience?

Fight Deck Team: Fighting games like Street Fighter and Tekken are exhilarating, but they often demand high execution, fast reflexes, and extensive practice to play at a competitive level. Fight Deck retains the strategic depth of fighting games while removing the execution barrier, making the experience more accessible without sacrificing the intensity of decision-making and the dynamic flow of combat.

The game captures the essence of a fighting game through two key mechanics:

✔ Stance & Hitbox System – Moves interact just like in a traditional fighter: jumping overheads, standing anti-airs, and crouching lows all play a role in reading and countering the opponent.

✔ Dynamic Round System – Instead of a fixed game structure, Fight Deck is built around three evolving round types: Neutral Rounds, Combo Rounds, and Wake-Up Rounds. Depending on how attacks land, the round type shifts dynamically, making the gameplay feel fluid, ever-changing, and true to a real fighting game.

This system not only perfectly replicates the ebb and flow of a match, but it also significantly enhances replayability, ensuring that no two battles feel the same.

Authentic Fighting Game Mechanics in Card Play

Michael: Fight Deck includes crouching, anti-air, super moves, wake-ups, and combos—all key mechanics from video game fighters. How did you adapt these into a strategic yet fast-paced card game?

Fight Deck Team:

  • Stance & Hitbox System: Color-coded hitboxes make it easy to recognize move interactions at a glance. It simplifies decision-making while keeping the tactical depth of high/low mix-ups and anti-airs.
  • Super Moves & Meter Management: Super moves are tied to the Meter Bar, which is a column of past cards that have been played. This introduces card resource management, forcing players to decide when to spend or save meter. It is just like in a traditional fighter.
  • Wake-Ups & Mind Games – The wake-up game is simulated through simultaneous card play, creating high-stakes mind games where players must read their opponent and condition them for future rounds.
  • Combos: Easy to Learn, Hard to Master – Players can string together combos simply by playing moves in descending speed, but mastering optimal combo execution requires deep game knowledge. Advanced players can even discover combo extensions, leading to greater strategic variety.

This system makes Fight Deck feel fluid, fast, and skill-driven, staying true to the intensity of traditional fighting games while being accessible to new players.

Game Modes & Replayability

Michael: The game features hand-drawn, high-resolution pixel art reminiscent of classic arcade games. How important was the visual style in recreating the retro fighting game feel? And what went into the art design process?

Fight Deck Team: The visual style was crucial in recreating the arcade-era fighting game experience, making Fight Deck feel like a true extension of the genre. The hand-drawn, high-resolution pixel art enhances immersion, capturing the nostalgic aesthetic while maintaining modern clarity.

Throughout the design process, we constantly referenced classic fighting games to ensure every pose, stance, and attack felt authentic. We even acted out moves ourselves to see if they looked cool and translated well into pixel art. The goal was to make each fighter feel like they belong in a ‘90s arcade cabinet, bringing that classic fighting game energy to a tabletop format.

Nostalgia & Pixel Art Aesthetic

Michael: With the Kickstarter campaign generating excitement, what’s next for Fight Deck? Do you have plans for new fighters, expansions, or even future board game adaptations of other video game genres?

Fight Deck Team: The success of the Kickstarter is just the beginning—Fight Deck is planned as a long-term series with new fighters and gameplay expansions in the works. The game’s modular design allows for easy adaptation to other fighting game characters. It makes it a perfect platform for future collaborations.

We’re actively looking to partner with other fighting card games. We even explore official licensed crossovers with established fighting game franchises. There’s a lot more to come, and we’re excited to keep growing the Fight Deck universe!

Michael: Thank you to the Fight Deck team for sharing how this game captures the thrill of arcade fighters in a fast, strategic card game. Wishing you success as you continue to expand the Fight Deck universe!
